Educational Requirements To Become An Orthodontist
Anyone interested in becoming an orthodontist will have to complete dentistry school, with a specialization in orthodontics. Before getting into dentistry school, applicants will need to complete a four year bachelor’s of science.
Once admitted to a dental school, they will offer courses such as microbiology, physiology, anatomy, biochemistry and more. On top of that you can expect courses focusing on orthodontics such as biology of tooth movement and roentgenographic cephalometry . Students are also taught lab techniques and techniques related to clinical practice. Dental supervisors supervise the training of students when they learn to treat patients.
Typically dental school takes 4 years to complete, with 2 years in the classroom and the next 2 completing hands on practice.
After completing dental school you will then need to become licensed in your specific state. Usually this will require passing both a written and practical exam. To be become an orthodontist, a specialized test will be administered.
