EKG technicians, also known as cardiographic or electrocardiograph technicians, specialize in EKG stress testing. The technician is also responsible for performing Holter monitor procedures. Here electrodes will be attached to the patient in various locations and the technician then manipulates switches to get a reading which will be interpreted by a physician.
With advanced training, an EKG technician will hook a patient to a portable EKG monitor. EKG Technician Training and Education
Most who choose to work in this field do so after obtaining an associate degree through a two year community or junior college program. Four year programs are increasing in popularity though. During the first year of study, core courses will be covered. The second year is where the EKG technician receives specialized training. Currently there are 34 programs which have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Professionals. EKG technicians have another option also. You may attend one of 168 CAAHEP-accredited programs specializing in echocardiography. Once this program has been completed, you may obtain professional certification. You may also receive on the job training which only takes four to six weeks. Those already in the health care field often make use of this program.
EKG Technician Certification and Licensing
Credentialing is not required although it is considered the professional standard. Most employers will only hire those who are credentialed. If you wish to pursue this option, The Cardiovascular Credentialing International and the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers offer certification. Continuing education will be required to maintain certification and the credentialing body can provide all information on how to obtain and keep certification.
